AmSoc Welcome-Back Party

Where: Montana Grill, Av. Juscelino Kubitscheck, 816 – Itaim
Price: R$60 per person

New AmSoc members and veteran gringos of São Paulo will be drawn together by a bounty of meat on skewers and an endless salad bar at the American Society’s traditional welcome back from the holidays party, to be held for the second straight August at the Montana Grill Steakhouse in the Itaim neighborhood.
The restaurant's specialty – and the party's theme – is churrasco, Brazil's unique style of barbecue.
Churrasco originated with Brazil's gaúchos (cowboys), who roamed the grasslands of southern Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul states centuries ago. Brazilians were the first to raise cattle in South America, importing it to São Paulo in the 1530s. Their fireside roasts were highlighted by sharing their meat in a buffet spread.
Today, most churrascarias (Brazilian steakhouse) have adopted the fixed-price, all-you-can-eat rodizio-style of service, where waiters steadily circle the room with countless types of meat on long skewers. Patrons can prompt new cuts with a simple hand wave, or flip up a red "stop" sign when they're stuffed. "Brazilian food is fantastic, you really want to try everything," said Elizabeth McKenzie, 47, who joined the American Society after moving with husband Michael from Chicago to São Paulo last March. "I love the tradition of churrasco, it combines Brazilian, Caribbean, and indigenous history." More than one hundred AmSoc members were on hand for last year’s event, enjoying chicken, beef, and pork served in a variety of cuts and often wrapped in bacon or filled with cheese. Those who prefer salads will not be left out, and can fill up their plates will their favorite veggies as often as they like.

The party will double as a membership drive and prizes will be given away throughout the evening to current members who bring newcomers to the dinner.
"The important thing is to get all our members together after the vacation, and to get newcomers there as well," said AmSoc President Marlene Rubeiz. The R$60 per person price tag includes the all-you-can-eat salad and seafood buffet and meat. Also, the first caipirinha or beer is free, as is the valet parking. Montana Grill's bar offers drinks and appetizers, and the menu includes cooked seafood, sushi, and sashimi.
The restaurant has just been reformed and we are expecting a terrific party.
