This award was founded in memory of Eric Poliak, past governor and president of the American Society, community member, and friend. After Mr. Poliak's untimely death in May 1984, the Board of Governors established this tribute to be given to the person in the São Paulo U.S. expat community who has unselfishly contributed his or her time and effort for the good of the entire community. The Eric Poliak Award represents the American Society's highest honor.
The American Society membership submits nominations for this award each year. A committee made up of former American Society presidents and previous winners of the award chooses the final recipient. The award is presented annually at the American Society Ecumenical Thanksgiving Eve Service.
